Ozonation / Disinfection―Water

Mazzei Ozone Contacting Systems Solve Water Quality Issues

Municipal water agencies face a multitude of water quality challenges encompassing disinfection, purification, and aesthetics. Ozone (O3) gas, renowned for its potent oxidizing properties and robust disinfection capabilities, has been effectively utilized by the bottled water industry for over three decades to treat water. Ozone treatment of drinking water yields a product that is not only safe but also boasts enhanced taste and aesthetic appeal, and offers water with reduced chemical content.

Today, ozone is increasingly finding its place in treatment plants for tap water as well. Leveraging expertise in mixing and contacting technologies, Mazzei employs computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to ensure each water treatment design is both efficient and effective. The process typically involves sidestream injection or the complete GDT™ system, often complemented by a Pipeline Flash Reactor™ (PFR), Pipeline Flash Reactor Plus (PFR+), or a nozzle manifold. Mazzei’s engineering team is dedicated to assisting clients in determining the most suitable design to meet their specific water treatment requirements.

In a notable example, ozone has been deployed to eliminate algal toxins at the Collins Park Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in Toledo, Ohio, with Mazzei technology part of its ozone dissolution systems. (Take a look at the Collins Park WTP Case Study.) Below showcases one of the Pre-basin Sidestream Injection/Pipeline Flash Reactor ozone systems designed for the facility, which is followed by serpentine contactors.

BENEFITS OF MAZZEI OZONE CONTACTING SYSTEMS:

  • Ozone Concentration
Concentration and solubility are directly proportional: higher ozone concentrations promote the transfer of more ozone into solution, so Mazzei’s high-efficiency injection and mixing improve the effectiveness of an ozonation program
  • Gas-to-Liquid Ratio
A lower gas-to-liquid ratio (Vg/Vl) enhances ozone mass transfer efficiency
  • Mixing
Intense and forceful mixing facilitates rapid renewal of the gas-liquid interface, thereby increasing mass transfer and reaction rates

SUCCESSFUL OZONATION IS BEST ACHIEVED BY:

  • Raising the ozone concentration while lowering the gas-to-liquid ratio (which creates fine bubbles and greater interfacial area for great mass transfer)
  • Operating under the highest available water pressure
  • Incorporating aggressive mixing components for optimal performance
  • Using an integrated system with intelligent design

Mazzei’s high-efficiency components work best together to optimize system performance. Let Mazzei assist you in designing an ozonation system tailored to your specific needs. Contact a Mazzei sales engineer to get started.
