Ozonation / Disinfection―Water
Mazzei Ozone Contacting Systems Solve Water Quality Issues
Water quality issues challenge most municipal water agencies. The issues range from disinfection to purification to aesthetics. Ozone (O3) gas is a powerful oxidizer and strong disinfectant. For more than 30 years, the bottled water industry has been using ozone to effectively treat its water. Treating drinking water with ozone creates a product that tastes good and is aesthetically pleasing―it is safe, good tasting and smelling water with fewer chemicals.
Today, ozone is increasingly being used in treatment plants for tap water, too.
Mazzei, an expert in mixing and contacting technologies, uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to make certain each design is efficient and effective. The first step in the process is sidestream injection or the complete GDT™ system, often followed by a Pipeline Flash Reactor™(PFR), Pipeline Flash Reactor Plus (PFR+), or a nozzle manifold. The engineering team at Mazzei will assist you in determining the best design to meet your desired water treatment needs.
Ozone will be used to remove algal toxins at the Collins Park Water Treatment Plant in Toledo, Ohio, and Mazzei technology was chosen to be part of its ozone dissolution systems. Below is one of the Pre-basin Sidestream Injection/Pipeline Flash Reactor ozone systems designed for the facility. These systems will be followed by serpentine contactors.

BENEFITS OF MAZZEI OZONE CONTACTING SYSTEMS:
- Ozone Concentration
Concentration and solubility are directly proportional: higher ozone concentrations promote the transfer of more ozone into solution, so Mazzei’s high-efficiency injection and mixing improve the effectiveness of an ozonation program
- Gas-to-Liquid Ratio
A lower gas-to-liquid ratio (Vg/Vl) which allows for greater ozone mass transfer efficiency
Intense, forceful mixing which allows for the rapid renewal of the gas-liquid interface, increasing the mass transfer rate and the reaction rate
SUCCESSFUL OZONATION IS BEST ACHIEVED BY:
- Raising the ozone concentration while lowering the gas-to-liquid ratio (which creates fine bubbles and greater interfacial area for great mass transfer)
- Operating under the highest water pressure available
- Including the most aggressive mixing components
- Using an integrated system with intelligent design
High-efficiency Mazzei components work best together to optimize performance.
