Raw dairy waste contains large amounts of organic and nitrogen compounds resulting in high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and, in addition, intense odor problems. Both the BOD and COD content must be reduced to state specified levels before treated waste can be released into the environment. Mazzei also has the solution for clean in place (CIP) applications. Mazzei has developed a skid utilizing ozone, a powerful oxidizer and strong disinfectant. When ozone is dissolved into water in the proper amount, it rapidly reacts with contaminants and readily inactivates organisms. A wider range of organisms is killed by ozonation than by chlorination, and the reactions, in general, are more rapid than that of chlorination processes. Although ozone is the strongest oxidizing agent commercially available, it is safe to handle. The primary reason is that it cannot be stored and, therefore, must be generated and used on-site. Where disinfection is critical, ozone is the answer, and Mazzei GDT™ skids which utilize ozone, can provide years of performance with low horsepower requirements at a very affordable cost.

Dairy Wastewater Aeration for Odor Control

Historically, aeration has proven to be the most effective means of reducing BOD/COD, but traditional surface aeration methods offer too little return for the amount of energy and capital invested, and they only affect the surface which allows anaerobic bacteria to proliferate beneath the surface and produce unpleasant odors. The Mazzei venturi wastewater aeration system utilizes proven water treatment concepts to deliver dissolved oxygen where it is needed most… the bottom of the basin. Utilizing the water’s own natural pressure, the oxygen is aggressively and uniformly distributed throughout the basin enabling aerobic bacteria to digest the organic matter. The result – fast, reliable BOD/COD/odor reduction. Unlike compressed air diffusion systems, venturi aeration’s efficiency increases with depth, allowing for deeper basins with smaller footprints. Clean In Place (CIP)

Ozone has the highest oxidation potential of all commercially available oxidants. Organic and inorganic materials are oxidized by ozone more rapidly and at lower residual concentrations than by other chemicals. Ozone is more effective than chlorine in destroying viruses and bacteria. Unlike ultraviolet and chlorine disinfection, after ozonation there is no regrowth of microorganisms. Ozone is becoming the primary oxidant of choice in many applications. The key to the use of ozone is the efficient transfer of ozone gas to solution and effective removal of entrained gas. The Mazzei GDT™ contacting process accomplishes both in a package that is compact and easy to install and maintain. In the patented GDT process, ozone is aspirated via high efficiency Mazzei venturi injectors. The dynamic mixing and mass transfer that occurs at the venturi injector is enhanced in a Flash Reactor™ specifically designed for each application. A patented degas separator and degas relief valve remove entrained gases for processing, and the total process takes place under pressure to maximize ozone mass transfer. Each system is custom engineered for high mass transfer efficiency and conveniently assembled on a compact skid frame.
